Social Media is a great internet marketing tool to get your business on the map. Ever since the economy has taken a turn, businesses are looking for a more cost efficient way of advertisement. In today's world we have great social media networks that are free. The World Wide Web (WWW) became publically available August 6th, 1991 but, it wasn't until 1994-1995 that the internet was publically accessible to the "average Joe". The first social media sharing network was Napster. Napster was a peer-to-peer (p2p) file sharing application that went online in 1999 which changed the whole music industry as a whole. The power was no longer in the record industry's hands but now was in the consumer's hands. At sometime during the year 2000 Napster was declared illegal (all of its copyright content) and soon a program called Limewire took its place. There are more social media networks than just "sharing networks". There's also social networking such as Facebook and Myspace. The first networking site that started it all was "Six Degrees" which started allowing people to make public profiles of themselves and connect with friends. In my opinion, this was the start of many businesses and search engine optimizers to follow and tap into this idea. Six Degrees was created in 1997 and became known as "web 2.0". For businesses, it gives them a free source of advertisement to a highly accessible audience at any time of the day. For example; I work for an internet marketing firm in Fort Lauderdale. If I wanted to I could create a fan page on Facebook and advertise to any of my fans at any time of the day for free. Businesses can now market to other countries with a language barrier using "twitter" such as Japan, Indonesia and Mexico to name a few.
